On Elfin Discourse Bias
This letter was submitted by a resigning Elfin member of the Mourning Magical Academy.
To my Colleagues and others who may be Concerned,
On the basis of numerous interactions with faculty members of the academy and its leaders in the preceding long-winter, I am withdrawing my application for a renewal of my position as a visiting lecturer. I will cite as the primary reason for this that nothing short of Elfin Supremacist rhetoric dominates nearly all aspects of our discourse, including and especially our external publications. There were a total of eight Academy publications that went into general circulation during my tenure, and each contained a dozen articles. Of these ninety-six articles, by my analysis, seventy-two contained rhetoric or language which singled out a single non-elfin race for negative description or, frankly, repetition of anecdotes unbecoming of serious academics. None commented critically on elves at all. The net effect on our discourse, and more significantly on our very historiography, shall be to silence and belittle all non-elfin voices.
Do I need to remind the faculty of this institution of higher learning that we are not an academy which caters only to Elves? Do I need to remind the faculty of this institution that we frequently welcome on board humans, half-elves, and even Dwarves as pupils? Do I need to remind the faculty of this institution that among their ranks are three members of races who were called, respectively: “every one a thief”, “kobold fuckers”, and “universally barbaric”?
The obvious consequences for my continued association with this academy in my field, should these ubiquitous practices ever become widely commented upon, are sufficiently dire that I daresay that resigning my position in protest would have been the wisest career move. However, in the interest of maintaining decorum, I leave all of you, my gifted colleagues, with the simple wisdom I try to impart to every one of my students: the world is populated by thousands of species of creature, including dozens if not grosses of species with inherent magical abilities which belittle our own.
I hope that, someday, I can read discourse from all of you which meets these meager standards.
